The article focuses on the following interrelated issues that characterize the chances and risks that are associated with the digitalization of the economy and society and which must be taken into consideration in order to achieve the goals of sustainable development. The structural aspects of the transition to the digital economy as a key link in the 4th industrial revolution are analyzed, while identifying those that are of primary theoretical and applied interest. We study the main changes that occur in the business processes of modern enterprises (organizations), including in the context of the formation of digital platforms, thanks to which not only in many ways the interaction of business entities is organized, but also which bring qualitatively new features to the architecture of modern market economics. We study the relationship between the transition of countries to the digital economy and ensuring their sustainable competitiveness, taking into consideration the innovative nature of the changes and the associated chances and risks.
