World Conference on Pandemic Studies-I, Ankara, Turkey, 01 May 2021, pp.114-115, (Summary Text)
Coronavirus (Covidien-19) epidemic, which emerged in Wuhan city of China affected the whole
world, and shortly after Turkey was under the influence. The coronavirus epidemic has been declared
as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. The epidemic affected millions of people, and
over three million people died worldwide due to the epidemic. Likewise, the fact that the vaccine
application is not realized at the desired level and the appropriate treatment method has not been found
yet, means that the risky situation continues for all humanity. The coronavirus epidemic, which harms the health of individuals and results in death, also has an impact on individuals' emotions, thoughts,
and attitudes. etc. These effects are observed more frequently due to situations such as practices such
as quarantine, social distance, flexible work, and daily changes in the number of cases, different news
in the press regarding the epidemic, and the fact that cases come very close to individuals. This study
aims to reveal whether the effect of the coronavirus (covid-19) epidemic on individuals' emotions,
thoughts, and attitudes varies according to demographic characteristics and to develop
recommendations by interpreting the results from the social work perspective. The population of the
study consists of individuals over the age of 18 who live in Sakarya. 407 individuals were reached
within the scope of the research. The data were collected using an online questionnaire using a
questionnaire developed by the researchers. In the first part of the questionnaire, there are questions
containing demographic information (5 questions), in the second part, there are questions about the
emotions and thoughts of the individuals (7 questions). The data were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0
package program. As a result of the analysis, it was concluded that the sense of trust in the near and
distant environment of the individuals has decreased since the spread of the coronavirus epidemic in
most of the demographic variables. Loss of trust in the near and distant environment is the most
undesirable situation for individuals. Loss of trust leads to disruption of communications, the
loneliness of individuals, damage to social networks, and many other negative consequences. The
social work profession and discipline have to apply by making micro, mezzo, and macro-scale
intervention plans for loss of trust, as well as all the negativities experienced in the coronavirus
process. These interventions are essential for the general order of individuals, groups, and society.
