This paper deals with the sentential category of modality. It is one of the most complicated linguistic categories having various forms of its expression in the language. It is worth mentioning that linguists accept the following ways of expressing modality such as modal verbs, intonation, modal words, interjection. This article deals with modal verbs which are also called defective verbs. (Musayev, 2009: p. 153) It has a lot of different definitions and interpretations. Nuriyeva S.T. defines it as a functional-semantic category as it expresses different types of relations between the reality and utterance. (Nuriyeva, 2019: pp. 56,63) Modal verbs express the speaker’s attitude towards the action or state. Gordon E. M. states that modal verbs represent an action as necessary or unnecessary, possible or impossible, certain or doubtful and the like. (Gordon, 1985, p.101) The author gives the list of modal verbs used in contemporary English such as can, must, may, ought (to) , shall (should), will, need, dare. Then the characteristic features of the modal verbs are given. Modal verbs are classified according to groups like primary and secondary. The author also emphasizes about double modals investigated by S.T. Nuriyeva (Nuriyeva, 2010, pp. 102-111) which can be considered as a new way of investigating modality. Michael Swan states that modal verbs with perfect infinitive can also refer to situations that are not unreal, but uncertain. (Swan, 2005: p264)
