A method enabling one, without interfering with the integrity of the hermetic casing or introducing auxiliary probing sensors, to determine the temperature (Tc) of the heat-absorbing surface of single- and multistage thermoelectric coolers is described. By this method, a calibration curve relating the thermopile thermo-e.m.f. to the temperature of the heat-absorbing surface is preliminarily plotted; next, by measuring the thermo-e.m.f. under operating conditions, the temperature Tc is determined using the calibration curve. © 1998 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
