The article analyzes the prerequisites for the formation of the concept of “green economy”, examines the essence of the theory of transition to “green economic development”, and highlights the main directions of the formation of the “green economy”. An option for innovative environmentally sustainable development of the regional economy could be the adaptation of the concept of “green” economy to the regional level. Today, this is the most relevant concept, which involves both sustainable and innovative development with the possibility of implementation at the regional level. One of the important attributes of the transition to innovative environmentally sustainable economic development (“green” economy) is new technologies. It should be noted that foreign literature uses a fairly wide range of similar terms in relation to this area: “cleantech”, “green” technologies, eco-innovations, sustainable innovations.
