Phenolic urethane coldbox (PUCB) cores made from silica sand can produce casting defects due to hot distortion errors. Without a fundamental understanding of thermo-kinetics and fluid dynamics of molten metal-sand core interactions, it is difficult to make decisions in preventing defects. Thus, an attempt was made to evaluate hot distortion in PUCB systems. Two sets of test castings were poured. In the first set, refractory spray paint, aluminum foil and aluminum spray paint materials were applied to estimate the hot distortion and the degradation of sand core specimens. In the second set of the trial castings, synthetic iron oxides (SIOs) were used as an additive to the PUCB system. Analysis of the data revealed that distortion defects can be reduced by changing the sand or weight of cores.
