In this review, we spotlight the methodologies for the direct synthesis of beta-halo nitroalkanes and nitroalkenes from the corresponding unsaturated hydrocarbons through vicinal halo-nitration strategies. The review is organized into two main sections: halo-nitration of alkenes and halo-nitration of alkynes. Both seminal works and recent advancements are discussed, with a particular emphasis on the mechanistic aspects of the reactions.
