Extensive fossil fuels and energy utilization have ensured the sustained development of modern society's economy. However, they have also led to a continual increase in greenhouse gas emissions, notably carbon dioxide, ultimately resulting in climate change and environmental deterioration. Investigating how to sustain low-carbon economic growth (LCEG) by adjusting energy consumption holds paramount theoretical and practical significance. This study, conducted through searches in the SCI-E and SSCI databases within the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection, employs bibliometrics to analyze and delve into papers related to LCEG and energy consumption from 2010 to 2022, and applies CiteSpace and VOSviewer to perform a scientifically rigorous statistical analysis of the pertinent literature. We find that the publication volume in this field exhibits a marked upward trend. Research is predominantly centered on environmental science. Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Journal of Cleaner Production, Sustainability, Energies, and Energy Policy were the most prolific journals. The most significant number of research publications is from China. Critical contributors to research in this area are primarily from the US, Pakistan, and Turkey. The average citation rates of papers of the three countries are 45.15, 40.35, and 47.18, respectively, significantly surpassing the rate of Chinese articles – 23.94. Present research on LCEG and energy consumption can be summarized into three principal categories: i) identifying the causes of carbon dioxide emissions; ii) exploring avenues for reducing carbon dioxide emissions; and iii) scrutinizing the nexus between energy, economy, and environment. The resulting research field is anticipated to integrate financial development, the digital economy, industrial aspects, innovation, and other emerging directions. Future research can integrate the low-carbon economy and energy consumption more deeply with environmental and energy science.
