A toponym is the name of a place. Toponyms play an important role in the lives of people and society. Toponymic characteristics is closely linked to the ethnic groups who used to live and live in the given territory with their own lifestyle, contacts, cultural and worldview specifics. The article examines the geographical names of Azerbaijan representing the ancient beliefs of the turkish people. Toponymy preserved the names associated with totemism. The groups of toponyms considered are the evidence of the turkish spiritual life and recreate the cultural worldview. In some cases the description of toponyms is accompanied by legends explaining the origin of the names of different geographical objects.
