Abstract

EPR signals have been obtained for highly purified sub-chloroplast fragments containing photosystem-2 (p.s. 2). The reversibility in the dark of the EPR signal II has been established in the presence of dichlorophenol-indophenol (DCPIP). The reduction of DCPIP by the fragments of the chloroplasts in the absence of exogenous donors occurs in the light without simultaneous evolution of O2. Electron transfer may be blocked by ousting the manganese by Mg2+ and Ba2+ bivalent cations. The Cd2+ cations partially suppress the electron transfer catalysed by p.s.2. The inhibiting effect of Cd2+ is removed in the presence of exogenous Mn2+ or hydroxylamine. © 1978.
