Employment of light figures for visualization of light dispersion effects and structural phase transitions in anisotropic materials is described. A polarizing microscope attached with a full color video camera, a temperature variable cryostat and a powerful source of monochromatic light has been demonstrated as a convenient technique for readily attainable and fast visualization. Wavelength dispersion of the largest partial birefringence and ferroelectric structural phase transition through an intermediate incommensurate phase are visualized in acute bisectrix light figures of biaxial TlInS2, TlGaSe2 and TlGaS2 ternary compounds with a layered structure. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
