A method for measuring the temperature of the heat-absorbing surface of thermoelectric coolers in encapsulated devices is described. The thermopile of a thermoelectric cooler is used as a temperature sensor. Owing to the high thermo-emf coefficient of the thermoelectric material from which thermopile arms are fabricated, hermopiles show appreciably higher sensitivity to temperature than conventional thermocouples. ©1996 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
