In this article the perspective of the research of toponyms in various languages is considered. The thought is substantiated that the character of toponyms is inflenced by the structure of the language, its fiurativeness, grammatical system, interaction with other languages, and also the environment in which the language carriers live. The style of thinking, perception of the world in images and representations are reflcted in the names of the geographical environment, in their safety and use in everyday life, and also in art practice. The use of toponyms, their transfer from one language to another, nature of distortions which thus are shown, depend on the group and language family to which they belong.
