The publication examines the emergence of diplomatic relations between the Safavid state and the Russian state in the second half of the 16th century, their development in the form of exchanges of embassies and diplomatic missions in the context of the struggle between Russia and the Ottoman state for control of transit trade East-West through the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea. The analysis of the geopolitical and economic interests of both states in the region is given, the steps they took to establish control over the Volga-Caspian transit trade, the development of stable political and trade ties are shown.
