Abstract
Azerbaijan is steadily moving towards a green economy and sustainable development, driven by a growing awareness of the importance of environmental conservation, resource efficiency, and economic diversification to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Inspired by prominent environmental economists such as Paul Hawken, Herman Daly, and Amartya Sen (Hawken in The ecology of commerce: a declaration of sustainability. Harper Business, USA, 1993), the country is actively pursuing policies that are in line with the global Sustainable Development Goals. Key efforts include expanding renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power and utilizing Azerbaijan's abundant natural resources. Energy efficiency measures are also being implemented to modernize industrial processes, implement smart grid technologies, and reduce carbon emissions. Sustainable practices are being promoted in agriculture to ensure food security while reducing environmental impact. Azerbaijan is also implementing circular economy principles by improving waste management systems and encouraging recycling initiatives. Government policies are central to these efforts, supported by strong partnerships with international organizations such as UNDP, the World Bank, and the European Union. The strategic framework “Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities for Socio-Economic Development” outlines the country's long-term vision for sustainable growth. This article examines Azerbaijan's transition to a green economy, complemented by visual data demonstrating the growth of renewable energy capacity from 2015 to 2030, particularly in the solar and wind sectors. Ultimately, the country's commitment to sustainable development is reflected in its policy actions, technological progress, and growing public engagement. Moving forward, further innovation, investment in green technologies, and community participation will be essential to accelerate sustainable economic progress while ensuring environmental preservation.
