Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI), an emerging transformative technology, has great potential to revolutionize educational assessment techniques. In this era, GAI-centred models and programs principally offer authentic and efficient assessment solutions as a robust tool in shaping the future of the learning ecosystem. This study conducts a literature review to delve into the intersection of GAI and educational assessment, extending its application to the maritime era as a unique domain. The study follows a systematic literature review methodology based on planning, conducting, and reporting phases to synthesize existing research on GAI in educational settings to investigate its potential to assess maritime competencies. After identifying the research gaps, the study will conceptually discuss how to bring a GAI-oriented solution to this issue. Besides understanding the background of GAI in educational assessment, this study also aims to guide future initiatives on the integration of GAI into maritime competency assessment systems, providing a foundation for further advancements in this area.
